Transferring Important Files From An Old Apple Computer

Upgrading to a new computer can be stressful, but it does not have to be. Moving all of those old files may seem like a drag, but there are easy ways to do it. Gone are the days when it would take about ten pounds of CD-ROMS, or twice that weight in floppy discs, to transfer all those important documents and folders onto your sleek new desktop or laptop. These methods will save you a little time, and you may even learn a trick that you were not previously aware of. In descending order, these are the two best ways to transfer documents between Apple (Mac) computers.
1. Use an external hard drive. The cost of digital storage space has been decreasing exponentially every year as technology improves to fit more data into a smaller space. You can get about a thousand gigabytes of data now for under a hundred dollars, which would have cost ten times that only a few years ago. That is more than enough space to fit all the necessary files from your old computer. Simply plug the hard drive into your old computer with the supplied USB cable and drag all your files into the folder that pops up on your desktop. Once finished, simply connect the external drive to your new computer and drag the files from the drive to your new desktop. Relatively quick and painless, but with the added cost of an external hard drive. BONUS: Now you can use the external drive to constantly back up your data (with Time Machine or comparable program).
2. Boot up your old computer as an external drive. All you need is a USB to USB or Firewire to Firewire cable. Situate the computers next to each other, and turn off the old one, leaving your new computer on and active. Next, connect the computers via their USB or Firewire ports (Note: Firewire is much faster, if your computers support it). Now, hold Command+T (Apple+T) keys down on your old computer as you press the power button to turn it on. This will boot it up into disk mode, essentially rendering it a large external hard drive. You will then be able to explore the folder that pops up on your new computer’s desktop and extract any files that you wish.
Both of these methods are very easy ways to digitally transfer information between computers, without all the mess of burned discs. Both methods work quickly, but the added bonus of the second method is the money you save by not going out and purchasing an external hard drive. Choose the way that works best for you!
