A Little Something Extra

There are a lot of reasons a business should have a blog. An effective blog working in tandem with a company website will enhance search engine optimization, improve visibility of the business, increase website ranking and build brand loyalty. A blog is an opportunity to share valuable content including written posts and videos throughout the web. This can present the company’s ideas and vision, which provides a different and more open perspective versus traditional marketing. Today’s customer is more captive, they’re seeking to develop relationships with businesses that provide more than a product or service. A blog can be a great way to differentiate your company from competitors. People are looking for that little something extra, a blog is a great way to provide it.

Implement a Strategy

Starting a internet marketing blog is a relatively simple process, however, it’s only one part of the equation. It should work in conjunction with the company’s website and social networks. If the budget permits, it’s best to work with a marketing professional with experience in social media and networking. Their expertise can speed up the implementation, help with the design, teach the basics of its use and make it interactive so readers can easily navigate between your blog and website. One of the reasons businesses fail to successfully leverage the power of a blog and other forms of social media is the lack of a cohesive plan. They rush to get the process without taking the time to formulate a clear strategy and message. Take your time, develop a plan and implement it carefully.

Update Your Content

Once a blog is launched, it’s best to assign a key employee to manage the content. Search engines have carefully crafted algorithms to measure traffic and rank sites. The best way to improve your rankings is to consistently update your content. While the initial process may be cumbersome, the maintenance soon becomes quite simple.

Leverage the Social Networks

When you start making posts, it’s important to let others know. This is where you need to leverage your relationships through social networking. As I mentioned previously, your blog should work in tandem with your site and other internet marketing tools like social networks. It can be every helpful to have regular updates to your Twitter, Linked In and Facebook pages. There is no sense in having a blog if others don’t read or watch what you have to say.

Let’s Get Started

I started blogging a few months ago. As I look back, it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I enjoy writing and sharing with others. Remember, the purpose of a blog is to share valuable information with others. While it can help increase the brand and visibility of your company, it’s not a forum to sell or market, leave that to the website. I often have people I don’t know contact me about doing business. They typically find me on Linked In or Twitter, see what I do and seek my counsel. When we connect using these internet marketing tools, I always ask what made them contact me. The typical response is they found me on a social network, checked out my blog, visited my site and wanted to learn more about how I could help them. This happens on a daily basis and is a perfect example of why companies need to blog. It’s a way to connect with others and allow people to learn who you are and how you think. An effective blog can drive traffic to your site and generate future business. If you’re not blogging, I encourage you to start.
